Concerns about climate change and the role of fossil fuel use

چکیده
The greenhouse effect, the ability of certain gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor to effectively trap some of the reemission of solar energy by the planet, is a necessary component to life on Earth; without the greenhouse effect, the planet would be too cold to support life. However, human activities are increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide and several other greenhouse gases, resulting in concerns about warming of the earth by 1–58C over the next century. Recent increases in global averaged temperature over the last decade already appear to be outside the normal variability of temperature changes for the last thousand years. A number of different analyses strongly suggest that this temperature increase is resulting from the increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, thus lending credence to the concerns about much larger changes in climate being predicted for the coming decades. It is this evidence that led the international scientific community through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Ž . Ž . IPCC to conclude after a discussion of the remaining uncertainties ANonetheless, the balance of the evidence suggests a human influence on global climateB. More recent findings have further strengthened this conclusion. Computer-based models of the complex processes affecting the carbon cycle have implicated the burning of fossil fuels as a major factor in the past increase in concentrations of carbon dioxide. These models also suggest that, without major policy or technology changes, future concentrations of CO will continue to increase largely as a result of 2 fossil fuel burning. Combating Climate Change: The Role of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
Climate change and its possible impacts on the environment and socio-economic systems now constitute the most important environmental problem facing mankind in the 21st century. Climate change will increase poverty and hardship, endanger food security, destabilize economies, decrease food and water and create social insecurity in many countries and undermine our goals for achieving sustainable ...
متن کاملAre Renewable Energy Policies Climate Friendly? The Role of Capacity Constraints and Market Power
This paper studies the impacts of renewable energy support policies on energy prices, fossil fuel supply and thus carbon emissions and climate change. We show that the impacts are highly dependent on capacity constraints of renewable energies and market power in the fossil fuel sector. We differentiate renewable energies by whether they face production capacity constraints (solar vs. biofuels) ...
متن کاملElectricity Generation Portfolio Analysis for Coal, Gas and Nuclear Plant under Future Uncertainties
High and volatile fossil fuel prices, growing concerns over energy security and the risk of climate change have all contributed to revived interest in nuclear power around the world. This is particularly the case in fast developing ASEAN countries. However, there is still considerable uncertainty about the prospects of nuclear power in terms of its economic viability and associated risks given ...
متن کاملDecomposition and Analysis of Driving Forces of GHG Emissions and Emission Reduction Potentials in Iran
Climate change cannot control unless by reduction of GHG emissions to secure level, therefore it is important to identify driving forces and possible scenarios based on targets. In this research, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index decomposition approach in combination with Extended Kaya Identity (EKI) are applied to investigate five factors could affect emissions during 1971-2012 in Iran. Thes...
متن کاملWorrying about climate change: is it responsible to promote public debate?
Some fear that provoking widespread worry about climate change may harm mental health. The Regional Wellbeing Survey, a large study of health, well-being and life in rural and regional Australia, examined climate change worry and attitudes. Most respondents were worried about climate change and agreed that fossil fuel use causes global warming, but there was no evidence to suggest that worry ab...
